Shorinji Kempo

Category: Martial Arts

Shorinji Kempo is a modern Japanese martial art, focusing on self-defence and physical and mental well-being. We are also one of the cheapest martial arts clubs at Imperial. On average, we sponsor each member £250/year in socials, equipment, insurance, grading fees, etc. - all for only £25 membership!

Mixing striking and throwing techniques with meaningful and practical philosophy, Shorinji Kempo teaches self-confidence, cooperation and mutual respect.

Every week we learn hard (punches, strikes and kicks) and soft techniques (grapples, releases and throws), and learn to combine the two into a beautiful and dynamic system of self-defence.

Shorinji Kempo is designed to effectively subdue any attacker with minimal damage by using the attacker's momentum and weak points on the body, meaning it does not rely on your strength or size to be effective.

Zen philosophy, which underpins our training and is essential for both mental and physical growth, is also practised every session through meditation.

As Shorinji Kempo is non-competitive and holistic, the aim of practice is for everyone to benefit, grow stronger and learn the art of self-defence.

Our training sessions are in the Union Gym, Wednesdays 6pm-8pm and Sundays 10am-12pm, starting Wednesday 11 October. We are very beginner-friendly, simply show up at our training in comfortable clothes, and you're good to go! Subscribe to our mailing list here for training and event updates!
